Outing to Limestone Heritage

On Wednesday 16th November our class, together with the rest of the other Year 6 classes, spent the whole morning at a unique touristic site: Limestone Heritage in Siggiewi where we learnt how the rock in Malta has formed millions of years ago, the development of the art of building, the tools used, had a hands-on workshop where we learnt how to engrave in stone while we had lunch amongst the lovely animals being raised in a separate area.

Learning is fun and last week our class got another first hand experience of how much we’re enjoying learning in our new class! As part of our weekly short writing task, we had to create from scratch a poster, in English, about a future school event. With the help of our teacher, who guided us throughout all the process, we learnt about how are posters designed, how are they meant to persuade us attend that particular activity, how can they attract people’s attention and all the tiny details which make up for an effective poster.

Next step was working on the layout, the style of the poster and the information needed roughly, All along we were exchanging ideas with our teacher and between ourselves so that we could cover as many different activities as possible. We loved every minute of the whole lesson – drawing, sketching and colouring – and when the bell went off we didn’t realise it was time for the first break!

All along the lesson the teacher was going round and making sure we were on the track. And we must say he was quite impressed. Underneath you can watch all our work. Hope you like them too!

Christmas decorations in class ...

From tomorrow onwards the kids are invited to get as many as xmas decorations as possible so to decorate the classroom as beautiful as it can be and thus create an extremely christmas spirit well before this jolly feast. Any kind of decoration is most welcome. From small xmas trees to cribs to decorating spray to vetch (gulbiena) to advent calendars.

Decorations shall be finished by Thursday 9th December.

Throughout this week we talked in length about the Great Siege of Malta of 1565 where the Knights of St. John and the Maltese defended bravely these islands against the siege by the Ottoman Empire from June till September of 1565 which ultimately led to a Christian victory and the following year to the building of a new city called Valletta in honour of the Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette.

We mentioned the three main fortifications used during the Siege - Fort St Elmo (Sant'Iermu); Fort St Angelo (Kastell Sant'Anglu) in Birgu & Fort St Michael (Forti San Mikiel) in Senglea. We talked about the importance of the death of the pirate Dragut for the Turks and the fact that the Siege took place in Summer.

Parents' evening

I would like to publicly thank all the parents (there was an enormous participation) for accepting the invite to come for the Parents' Evening. It was a lovely two and a half hour experience as it was nice getting to know most of you better and discussing your kids' well-being.

Your positive feedback was overwhelming and most welcoming. It pays for all the hard work in class and I apologise for any latedness in your appointment.

Limestone Heritage

Last Wednesday 17th November our class had a very educational and interesting outing. Thank God it turned out to be a lovely day - starting from the very beautiful weather to having a lovely time watching the kids yearning to learn and having fun. First we visited the Limestone Heritage Museum situated in a former limestone quarry in Siggiewi where after a short (but immensely interesting) video explaining the history of the Maltese stone, children where given an mp3 for the walk-through museum ...

Then afterwards the children had a stine carving session which they had been looking forward to for ages! You can see the smiles on their faces!

An interesting trekking experience

On Monday 8th November our class went on a really interesting and unique trekking experience from Dingli Cliffs via Fawwara to Hagar Qim. Unfortunately that morning I was feeling quite unwell and cause of the unstable weather I had to miss it! But nonetheless the trekkers took some pictures of the experience and here they are. Today we learnt all about time zones and the 24 different time zones that the world is made up of. How is that while we were doing our English lesson at 11am, kids in Sydney Australia were probably watching telly while those in New York (5am) were still fast asleep! How if we were to go far out countries we have to move the watch backwards or forwards!

This week we started our English Reading Programme with a non-Fiction book called "Wild Weather" where we came to know about storms, thunderstorms, hail, thunder, lightning and the heating up of air, etc.

Today for our first English Comprehension of the year we talked about coral reefs, which are a natural beauty to look at ...

We learned that they are not plants but animals which grow inside like a little cup ... and that they look like flowers or trees. Then we talked about the greatest reef which exists in the world - the GREAT BARRIER REEF in Australia, which is over 22,000 kilometres long. Here is a short video about this magnificent place, considered one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Last Saturday me and a quite big number of kids in my class attended an afternoon two-hour session of the International festival of Children's Literature held in St James Cavalier in Valletta between Thursday 22nd and Sunday 25th April. Children enjoyed themselves reading in total silence, or exploring the different styles of kids' literature, drawing or writing poetry and finally listening to an exclusive interview with three of the most popular children's local authors: Carmel G. Cauchi, Charles Casha and Trevor Żahra.

Last Friday all the Year 5 classes went on foot to the Birkirkara Football Club artificial training grounds at Infetti for a football festival. The weather didn't promise anything good and in fact it turned out to be a wetty morning with, unfortunately, two or three rain interruptions. But the kids had a great time just the same! They carried out different skills concerning football like shooting, passing, dribbling or holding the ball.

Today a group of Italian students and penfriends (of many kids from our and the 5.3 class) from the primary school of Scicli (near Ragusa), in Sicily, came over for a two day visit to Malta. Their teachers told me that this tour was a reward for the kids' effort during recent exams.

And courteously today they started their short voyage with a visit to our school during the bikeathlon activity. The Italian kids and us soon made friends and started talking about loads of things - hobbies, interests, games and other stuff! The penfriends finally met face to face ... and found themselves in seventh heaven!

Afterwards they came over to our class where we gave each one of them a little souvenir - a postcard about Malta made by ourselves during yesterday's Crafts lesson. Then we watched a short clip, in the media room, about their school and an environmental UNESCO project they embarked upon.

The Crown Jewel

My grand grand pa gave me astory book for my birthday. I started reading it immediately and its name was The legend of the crown jewel.

Once there was a team of mountain climbers who went for an adventure. They wanted to find the crown jewel. The crown jewel was on the top of the highest mountian of their town.
They left home befor the sun came up.They walked a lot of miles untill they reached the top of the mountain. They thought it was easy until the mountain started moving under their feet. They didn't know what was happening until they saw that it was a monster. The team saw
a small cave where there was a very bright light. So they ran inside the cave and followed the light and when it stopped they saw a mirror. It opened to where the crown jewel was. But there was one thing they had to do - if they didn't get the crown jewel before 10 o'clock they would be imprisoned in the cave forever. It was nearly 10'o clock so one of them decided to go for it by himself. As soon as Hegra grabbed he ran out as fast as he could and the mirror closed after him. The monster came back to a mountain and everything came back to normal.

Finally a rescue team came for them and took them back home!

In the group of gypsies there were men, women and children. These people were a little dirty, lazy and the place where they lived was practically very messy. The prince of gypsies had a two-edged sword. One day he was going to clean his sword but he couldn't find it. So he offered a sum of money to the person who could find it. So everyone started looking but nobody could find it. When the prince realized that the people couldn't find his sword, he went to look for it himself. But a woman decided that she would go with him, so the prince said ''yes''. They started looking in the Royal Castle, but it wasn't there. All of a sudden a storm came up, so they had to abandon the search. They started to search again after about three weeks. As I was the favourite of the prince he chose me, this time, to go with him.

At last the two edged sword was found in a cryogenic chamber beneath the palace. The prince was so happy and he thanked and gave me the sum of money.

An interesting school visit to Vittoriosa

On Friday 12th March , our school organised an outing to the historical village of Vittoriosa, better known as Birgu. I was so looking forward and hoped it wouldn't rain!

The first thing we saw on our way, on this cloudy morning, was the Mosque in Corradino Hill which is also a school. We then drove through Cospicua. We started our walk from infront of the three gates. When we got to the Advanced Gate , we saw a bust dedicated to Sir Paul Boffa, an ex-Prime Minister, who was born in 1890. He was born here and represented Vittoriosa until he died in 1962. We started walking towards Couvre Porte (The Hidden Gate) where we saw another bust of Nestu Laiviera who was born in 1908 and died in 1984. Mr Laviera was the speaker of parliament at that time. Then we got through the Main Gate and off to the Inquisitor's Palace which acted as a Church Court from 1574 until 1798.

We then got to the Victory Square where there is the parish church dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The feast of this patron saint is celebrated on the 1oth of August. We walked past where the clock tower, that was destroyed during the war, used to stand. In the middle of the square from where the good Fnday procession passes there is a monumant representing the victories in the Great Siege and the Second World War . We then visited the church and the museum adjacent to it. In the museum we saw the sword and the cap used by Grand master La Vallette. There were photos of the clock tower before it was destroyed and also of people receiving the holy communion through a special instrument to avoid contamination of the deadly disease. On the way back we walked past the monument representing Freedom Day.

We went to the Maritime Museum where we saw items associated with sea. Our trip ended back at the Inquisitor's palace where a very good guide explained in detail all that we find in this huge palace.

It was a very interesting experience and I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Mdina!

The Giant Snake (Create-a-story)

I am a giant snake and I live in a big tree by the sea with my five babies.

One night, when I went to feed my babies, the food wasn't there! Someone had stolen the babies’ food. I was really angry and I had to go and find some food for my babies because they were extremely hungry. When I was on my way, I saw a mysterious lighthouse. I got inside and I saw many strange lights. There were people too and when they saw me they were really frightened of me. I escaped from the window and continued my search for food for the babies. On my way I saw a giant snowball heading towards me. It came from the icy mountain and so I started crawling with all my power to hide somewhere. When the giant snowball fell into the sea, I continued searching for food. Now I heard a strange sound coming from the sky. I looked up and I saw fire rocks falling down from the sky. They are called Cattabones! Again I had to hurry with all my power to hide from them. When I was going back to my nest, I saw a big box full of insects.

I was happy that I saw this box because I took some of them and went to feed my babies. Now they are not hungry anymore and now they are happy and after the meal/dinner they got sleep.

The Thunder Men from Mars (Create-a-story)

Once upon a time there was call to the Thunder Men which were from Mars. The man on the phone was shouting ''Emergency! Emergency! This is London calling. We are being destroyed by Heatblast, Help! Now he is in your secret lab.”

''But we don't have a lab'', said Mike. ''He means the underground defence network!” replied his friend Philip. ''Now let's go and rescue them''. During the night, the Thunder Men from Mars walked into the underground lab and ran to the big door were they had the enormous screen. They went into the small room and switched on the automatic screen. They saw him taking the blue crystal. After a while they were feeling hungry and thirsty but they had locked the front door and so had to suffer an ordeal of hunger and thirst. Then they used their harpoon to take of the fish in the river which was called ''The River of Underground'', they crossed the river safely and used their amazing power of thunder to break the door and fortunately they saw Heatblast taking the crystal just in time so they fired thunder at him. Then Philip ordered Mike, ''Take the crystal'' so he grabbed it as fast as a cheetah. Then they calmly called the police.

The police took Heatblast to the cell. The police thanked Philip and Mike, the Thunder Men from Mars for their great help. Then Heatblast, from the cell, lay down his head and said ''I will never mess with the Thunder Men again!'' THE END

The Mummy's Baby

A baby boy was born in a hospital but the mother and father were not happy with it so they took it away and sold him. An Egyptian mummy heard about the baby and decided to take it. The secret I didn't tell you about this baby boy is that it was born from a giant family!

The baby was sent in a huge box with small holes so it could breathe and was left in an Egyptian tomb. A few minutes later the baby heard someone walking. It went ''Tlick … tlick'' until ... the mummy opened the box. ''How cute!'' she said and took it further inside the tomb. She gave it some fresh milk and burped in her face but she didn’t mind. Then she put him in a cosy bed. The next day he got bigger and bigger and bigger until he was bigger than the tomb itself! The mummy was surprised to see that the giant baby couldn’t fit in the Tomb so it had to sleep outside. The odd thing is that the mummy noticed that she herself got bigger.

The next day the mummy was big as the baby! When it burped on her face it was a giant’s burp that made her also get bigger. The baby and the mother were happy together. The thing is this never happened and I don't think it will.
